Boo-Boo Buster

This quarter the 3 & 4 year old Sunday School class is learning about Boo-Boo Busters. We are following the lives of people in the Bible who trusted God, accepted God’s forgiveness and asked Jesus for help. As I reflect over the adult study of committing to one another, the lesson on Zacchaeus the Jew comes to mind. He caused a boo-boo in other people’s lives by charging an exorbitant amount in taxes. This in turn caused a boo-boo in his life as he likely was very lonely. His own people, the Jews, would have hated him and the Romans would not have fully accepted him either.

The day Jesus came to town Zacchaeus was merely curious as to who He was. This wee little man had no idea his life would be transformed that day. Even though the Bible does not give us the content of their conversation, we can definitely see a change in Zacchaeus immediately. He promised to make restitution over and above what he had taken.

Luke 19: 9-10 says “And Jesus said to him, “Today salvation has come to this house, because he, too, is a son of Abraham. For the Son of Man has come to seek and to save that which was lost.”

I believe Jesus sought out Zacchaeus in order to save and restore him. What a precious picture of forgiveness. The boo-boos were made better both in Zacchaeus’ life as well as the people he had hurt.

The 3 & 4 year olds have very tender hearts. They were sad when they realized the heart boo-boos in our story. They became extremely happy to learn that Zacchaeus fixed the boo-boos.

We can do that for one another as well. I pray as we commit to one another in the coming days, weeks, months even years, the boo-boos will heal and the love will be evident to all who see us.

Thumbs Up

Every child needs a thumbs up! Children long to know that they are important, valuable, loved, and amazing...after all, they've been created in God's own image (Genesis 1:27, 9:6)! They have skills and abilities that are unique. They have been given a mind to think, hands to create, legs to jump, and mouths to communicate some of the most hilarious things you'll ever hear.

When we give our kids a thumbs up, they  know that we approve of them. At "church" we want our children to know that they are important, valuable, loved, and amazing. How do we communicate that to these precious souls? By teaching them the truth of the Gospel! It doesn't get any better than knowing that God the Father has given them a thumbs up because of their trust in His Son (John 1:12, Romans 8:1, Hebrews 11:6))! So, it is our goal to communicate the gospel simply and accurately.

Thumbs serve a very important purpose. They are uniquely designed. They are valuable. And it's quite clear they are loved by the teething toddler. But there's more to the hand, isn't there?

While it is important that our children find their self-worth and value in Christ, it is also crucial that they see past that thumbs up to the rest of the hand. They are part of a church-a group of believers-who need each other.  The very skills and abilities that have made them unique are the Maker's creative tactics for evangelizing the world and equipping the church. Beyond their unique skills and abilities, our children also have spiritual gifts. These gifts are ready to use right now!

A thumbs up is affirming and needed, but let's not stop there. High five, anyone?

Committing to One Another

Sunday was a successful kickoff to our church-wide study "Committing to One Another." As part of Big Church Sunday our Lighthouse Kids remained in the service and were able to hear Pastor's introductory sermon to the study.

Children learned that without Christ they are desperate, hopeless, alone, have no place to call home, and have no part in God's covenant. What a dismal life!

Thankfully they also learned that with Christ they have peace and access to their Father God.
As if that weren't splendid enough, at the moment they accepted Christ as their Savior they also gained a forever family-brothers and sisters-that would not just live with them forever in Heaven, but that would encourage and help them here on Earth. What child doesn't need to know that they belong?

Since Sunday, the most FAQ has been, "Will our kids be studying this series as well?" That's a great question, and the answer is no...but yes.
Why no?
Our Sunday school lessons and Lighthouse Church lessons will continue as normal. Our children will not study a children's version of "Committing to One Another." In Sunday school, children will continue with their themed units. The Gospel Project will continue in Children's Church and Lighthouse Church as we feel the continuity will promote a solid understanding of the chronological events in the Old Testament. However, we think they might just be getting the best of both worlds...
Why yes?
As you, our parents, are studying and making adjustments to your attitudes, conversations, and patterns concerning the church, your children will be watching you, listening to you, and of course riding along in the car as you bring them to participate in our weekly events. It has been said that "...behaviors are caught, not taught." Your children will learn from you. The value that you place on being with your church family will be the value that your children place on being with their church family. The lessons taught in Sunday school and Lighthouse Church will become as valuable to your children as church is valuable to them. After all, isn't it true that we can assess the value we place on something by the time and energy we invest in it? So, parents, your children will learn what church is from you. From us, they will continue to learn who  God is, who they are without Him, what He did to save them, and how they can become part of His church.
Throughout the study, we will try to offer some ideas, suggestions, and anecdotes that will help you as you nurture your child's spiritual understanding and growth as it pertains to the church and the idea of church membership.

If you have specific questions that you would like for someone to address or if you have some ideas that have proven successful in your family, please email Rebecca Phillips at becteach3@hotmail.com.
